Adelaide like Melbourne, experiences harsh extremes of climate, with hot summer days and nights and cold winters, especially the nights. When the wind blows off Bass Strait in winter it can be very icy. When it blows in from the desert it can be very very hot.. Average Rainfall in Adelaide is a sparse 520m a year, compared with 650m in Melbourne and over 1150m in Sydney.
This comparatively harsh climate makes for a resourceful state. At the time of writing this page, SA is the only Australian state with both a mandatory deposit scheme for bottles and cans, and a ban on plastic bags. Water is precious here. Its not lost on South Australians how much water is taken out of the Murray river system but the states further upstream, when these states get so much more rainfall anyway.
Whilst Adelaide is known for its European flavoured architecture and gardens, driving around Adelaide I saw a great many gardens with drought resistant Australian Natives in them. I despaired as to how often their mowers might come out of the shed - I'm in fact revisintg Adelaide as a write this start of April 2010(dry season) and there is barely are blade of grass.(Editors note 14/10/2010:- Its rained this last week in Adelaide, and its a sight to be seen with a green carpet of grass pushing up everywhere. I can almost here the shed doors creaking open to get the mowers out!)
Shedspot sells more large sheds in Adelaide on average, than in Sydney or Melbourne which I attribute to the smaller proportion of inner city living. We also sell more carports here on average, whereas we sell more garages in Melbourne and Sydney. I'm not sure what to put this down to – perhaps it’s because more people in Adelaide are seeking to protect their cars from the sun, than the rain.
We sell a lot of shed shelving to Adelaide, which indicates to me that a great many of our garden sheds are not being used just for storage. When used just for storage things tend to be just piled inside... shelves means our sheds are being used for.... backyard building? Arts and craft such as painting and pottery? A $500 wall fitted air-conditioning unit and some insulation makes our sheds a cheap workshop... and from April to October you'll not need it on anyway.
I would have thought we’d sell more large aviaries in Adelaide than in Sydney and Melbourne, but its not the case, we sell approximately the same numbers of our small, medium and large aviaries in Adelaide. Most popular birds in our aviaries in Adelaide, are Pink Cockatoos(or Major Mitchell Cockatoos) and cockatiels.... often both housed together in our large aviaries.
